Solitude and a Puppy
Once upon a time, very, very long ago, there was a fairy king who lived in
a crystal palace high in the mountains under the aurora borealis which flared
green and blue and gold into his windows during the long, dark winter nights.
Sometimes there would be no sun at all for many days. And the king grew depressed
and very lonely in his heart for he had no kin. So he turned to prayer asking
for company and someone to love.
Almost immediately there was a knock on the door, and the king hurried to
see who was there to answer his prayer. Imagine his surprise to see only
a basket covered in red felt. A note was attached. “Merry Christmas, dear
One,” its cheerful letters read.
Drawing the basket inside, the king whisked off the blanket, and what to
his wondering eyes did appear, do you think? No, not reindeer but a small,
speckled puppy with big brown eyes who jumped into his arms yipping with
excitement and delight.
“Hello there, fellow,” said the king. “What is your name and who sent you?”
“I am known as Patches in Never-Never Land,” replied the puppy. “You called me.”
“So I did, said the king closing the door on the cold. “Are you hungry?”
“Ravenous,” replied Patches with a shiver and a shake. “It was a long trip.”
“Where did you come from?” asked the king. “Where is Never-Never Land?’
“Never you mind,” quipped the puppy, “Where is lunch?”
“Come with me,” said the king cuddling and warming him at his heart.
Now, Oh best Beloved, you may be wondering what this is all about. So many
people are lonely and sad at Christmas time because they have no one to love
or to love them except those dear animals who offer to come and live with
them. So open your heart to those fuzzy ones who do love you, and offer your
love in return to some other lonely soul who may live close by you.
