Current initiatives promoting prudent antimicrobial prescribing and management have generally failed to include nurses, who potentially have key roles in starting smart and in focusing treatment through early recognition of sepsis, review of the route of administration and appropriate intravenous-to-oral switch, duration of treatment, and therapeutic drug monitoring. Resistance to other nucleoside analogues similarly arises through mutations in the reverse transcriptase gene. Each of these result from deficiency of specific lysosomal enzyme involved in the degradation of mucopolysaccharides or glycosaminoglycans, and are, therefore, a form of lysosomal storage diseases.
